New displays and exhibits of artifacts were installed in 2012. The visitor center features several 8-foot-high educational panels lining the walls. These illustrate historical accounts that explain what prompted large numbers of Chinese to immigrate to the United States in the 19th century.
Other displays recount the immigrants’ experiences and tell about the role of Kam Wah Chung and Co. by Doc Hay and Lung On. Be sure to stop at the theater and listen to an Oregon Public Broadcasting documentary detailing the contributions of Doc Hay and Lung On to the John Day area.
Among the displays and interpretive panels are a few relics from a fascinating collection of 120,,000-plus items including copies of Doc Hay’s uncashed checks, letters from patients and friends, and the new Kam Wah Chung & Co. VR experience room.
A gift shop containing books, postcards, t-shirts & Chinese curios is located in the interpretive center.
